The Killer’s Remorse by Jimmy Ray Carter is a historical mystery set in 1960s San Francisco. The story follows homicide detective Holly Webb, who is the city’s first woman to be assigned to the division. Along with her partner, Grant Parker, she’s launching a cold case team and is investigating cases that go all the way back to 1929. The cases are haunting and range from a flutist who vanishes to the suspicious death of a stockbroker during the 1929 market crash, and a young girl who is kidnapped weeks before Pearl Harbor. Holly is determined to find answers that also force her to talk to reluctant witnesses, handle the past delicately, and the lingering effects of age-old decisions. Readers are in for a historical ride that proves how even cold cases still demand and deserve answers, no matter how deeply they are buried.
I loved The Killer’s Remorse and its classic cold-case style. Jimmy Ray Carter did a great job of developing Holly Webb’s character as a compassionate detective. He effectively brought out buried human motives behind each cold case that made it a fascinating mystery. As the layers of each case are peeled back, so are the truths that have been long buried along with emotional trauma. The variety of investigations felt well-thought-out and researched. The detailed history and how he tied prejudice, grief, and moral issues into the theme were a smart choice. Readers who enjoyed Michael Connelly’s The Poet would most appreciate a story like The Killer’s Remorse. It had me hooked from the first chapter.
