The Last Crusader: Attack of the Goblins is a fantasy novella by Jeffrey Loefer which is filled with deadly sword action and quirky humor. Set in a medieval-like world, it follows a group of warriors called Crusaders who go on quests and protect the land from goblins and trolls. When a scout warns that the goblins are bringing back their god, a sure sign of war, it’s time for action. A Crusader named Brock and three others are sent to find the goblin lair and rescue a scout who was captured. But Brock had a nightmare about a battle in which the goblins killed every Crusader except him, and they were closing in as he woke up. Was it only a dream? Or was it a forewarning of doom?

In The Last Crusader, Jeffrey Loefer gives us an entertaining adventure tale that blends medieval weaponry and fantasy creatures with modern vernacular, slang, and humor. There’s a lot of killing on all sides as the well-paced plot reveals some unexpected turns along the way. Brock and his comrades, male and female, may carry swords and shields, but they also flip in the air for that perfect killing stroke, fight off something in their food that comes alive on their plates or wants to smother them, deal with each other with sarcasm-tinged camaraderie, and face death with resigned courage. I’d want these Crusaders between me and a horde of goblins any day. This is a short read which can appeal to young adults and adult readers alike. I look forward to a sequel.
