The Lie by Jude Berman is a gripping thriller with compelling characters in very tight and compromising situations. Jedd is a top cybersecurity expert who wakes up in an unknown underground place, kidnapped and left without food or water. He struggles to remember how it all happened. Flashes of memory suggest he was working on a top-secret project, targeting cyberattacks, and asking friends for help. Meanwhile, his friends and family race against time across California to locate him. They face sabotage by political actors, meet with multiple cyber threats, and misinformation. Can they find and save Jedd, or will everything come crashing down?
Jude Berman's The Lie will captivate readers with the worldbuilding in a California that nurtures paranoia. The political corruption explored in this book is reminiscent of the current political atmosphere in the United States, with propaganda becoming a tool that shapes political discourse. Misinformation gains ground as the days run out, and it is hard for Jedd’s friends to sift truth from lies. Readers will enjoy the suspense and be enthralled by the depiction of Jedd’s situation in captivity, an emotionally grounded and psychologically deep exploration of the mind of someone taken against his will. The author has created likable characters who are elaborately developed as each faces a serious struggle. The fight for democracy is rewarding. Jedd’s calmness and intelligence are traits that set him apart. The themes of misinformation, manipulation, corruption, and the place of technology in democracy are well done.
