Leon Mecham's The Long Way Around is a riveting memoir filled with exciting sports exploits, tumultuous family relationships, and troubling religious experiences. Though Leon was raised in a religious Mormon home, he found his parents' behavior questionable. He had to struggle with surviving his mother's emotional abuse and his father's actions before he was sent out of the house for not attending church. Though Leon's chaotic relationship with his family remained constant throughout the years, he endeavored to make the best of his choices. Guided by his grandfather's advice, Mecham worked hard to make a living, whether he was working in the oil fields or learning carpentry. His story takes us through his various exploits, including dealing with drug addiction, playing football, and giving love another chance after three divorces.

Leon's life story is amazing. From biking, racing cars, and laying hands on as a bishop to playing tennis and winning trophies in karate, Leon Mecham's story shows he's an adventurous soul who has lived a rich and active life. Thankfully, Leon's skillful writing complements his compelling story. Apart from the lyrically narrated events, his soulful writing displays that he maintains a great level of self-awareness and has gone deep into the art of meditation. Leon, who has survived several abusive treatments and challenges, inspired me to forgo past hurt and transgressions with profound words like, "Meditation brings the meditator to the present." All in all, The Long Way Around combines diverse experiences that draw attention to the importance of living life to the fullest, working hard, and confronting bullies. The fast-paced stories and the smart mix of vivid fight scenes, profound life lessons, and inspiring feats left me completely speechless!

"The Long Way Around", is a narrative written by Leon Mecham describing his rough childhood in a dysfunctional family. After growing up poor on a farm and experiencing abuse and neglect from his parents and grandparents, Leon found comfort in his sister, who bravely battled cancer. The book also looks at Leon's experiences in the Mormon church highlighting the influence of religion is his turbulent life. Mecham's tale demonstrates the tenacity of the human spirit and the power of self-discovery.
Mecham's characteristics are worthwhile. His change from a shy, mistreated youngster to a confident, self-assuring adult is nothing short of astounding. Mecham's road has not been easy, but cheer for him, hoping he'll achieve the serenity and happiness he so badly seeks. Mecham's journey through the oil fields stimulated my interest and I found myself drawn to it.
His experiences in this harsh and unforgiving environment are vividly depicted, and I could help but admire his resilience and determination as he navigates the challenges of this new world. The relationships he forms with his coworkers and the way they support and protect one another are particularly touching and serve as a reminder of the power of community of difficult circumstances.
That being said, I did note that the book does have certain themes that certain readers would find challenging to relate to. Mecham had incredibly horrific experiences with abuse and neglect and some people would find it difficult to reconcile his suffering and anguish with the fortitude and strength that he eventually exhibited. Furthermore, Mecham's relationship with the Mormon church is explored in the book, which may be sensitive to some, especially those who who have personal experience with religious institutions. The book was exceptionally well-edited and error-free.
To sum up, this is an essential book for everybody curious about the intricacies o the human condition. The storyline is rather interesting and one that a lot of people can relate to. Mecham's persistence, even in the face of challenges, was inspiring. I would give this book a rating of 4 of 5 stars denying it a star because some of the storylines like that of the Mormon church, were just too sensitive to be discussed in such a way. I would recommend this book to people facing abuse and neglect and to those who are discouraged in every way.

The Long Way Around by Leon Mecham. A selected series of scenarios experienced by the Author, whom I have known and loved for decades. I personally recognize many of the characters in the book who are accurately portrayed. Some of the names have been changed to protect the innocent and the guilty. These short stories provide us viewpoints in understanding a very unique individual who possessed a strong desire to rise out of the mire while accepting sacrifices that would be required.
We can see through his eyes and experience, through his footsteps, a life filled with challenges, successes, heartbreaks, confusions, clarifications, and triumphs (as well as Harleys).
Unless you have personally enjoyed a perfect life devoid of any conflict, you will be able to identify situations that can be likened to yourself and perhaps gain a little wisdom and direction in your life adventure.
This is a worthy and enjoyable read that is deserving of a sequel that would include a small portion of so many more events and would serve to be icing on the cake!

The Long Way Around: A story of grit, resilience, setbacks, and determination. It will remind you of Rudyard Kipling’s poem “If”, come to life.
Born in a culture of poverty and ignorance, the author struggles with the identity that his parents projected onto him. He refused to allow the examples and modeling his parents exhibited to define his life.
Through circumstances, personal choices, setbacks, heartaches: fasten your emotional seatbelts and take a journey of existential crises of defined fate of a life of endless possibilities.
Enjoy the book, it will make you recognize- you are the one to make a difference in your life.
