The Lost Republic by W.J. Speed follows the titular Ace Gonzalez, a passionate environmental activist who opposes the construction of the Emerald Oasis Towers, a large development project that threatens the local ecosystem. When he discovers a body in the water, he investigates further, facing threats from those involved in the development, including Liona, the lead developer. His life becomes even more complicated when he's arrested in connection with the murder and targeted. Despite constant intimidation and risk, Ace continues his fight against the development, uncovering connections to organized crime, human trafficking, and corruption. Throughout, Ace holds fast to his opposition to the project and the discovery of dark secrets, a trajectory that puts him in a series of life-threatening situations.
W.J. Speed delivers a tight, fast-paced mix of eco-advocacy and murder in The Lost Republic, with its imperfect and immensely likable lead, Ace Gonzalez. The writing is intelligent and sharp, with an excellent juxtaposition of atmosphere, corporate greed, political maneuvering, and both ends of the morality spectrum. For all his trouble, it is fun to see Ace in more than one relationship quagmire, but the low-key budding romance with Analee feels the most authentic, and the one I rooted for. This is, of course, after Ace's pup Trigger, who is a true star. Speed gives great attention to detail in the near cinematic descriptions that a reader would expect from a mystery swirling around a luxury development, whether it is the bar, the bayou, the marina, or the one thing I now have to try—a grouper sandwich. Overall, this is a terrific story with plenty of twists, and a protagonist I'd be more than happy to follow in future novels. Very highly recommended.
