The Primary Colors by Morenike Euba Oyenusi is a thoughtful and timely story that uses a vibrant cast of colors to explore important themes like difference, fear, and acceptance. The book begins in a town where red, yellow, and blue live peacefully together; however, change arrives in the form of a new neighbor who looks unfamiliar and “peculiar.” As whispers of a monster make their way through the community, young Cobalt Blue and his friends must wrestle with what they've heard and what they observe for themselves. Oyenusi’s storytelling is gentle but purposeful, weaving a narrative that resonates with both children and adults. The message is clear and meaningful without being heavy-handed: difference is not something to fear, and kindness and connection can overcome misunderstanding. Through its cleverly symbolic use of colors and uplifting narrative, the book encourages us to look past appearances and rumors and seek understanding.

As an educator and book reviewer, I especially appreciated how The Primary Colors by Morenike Euba Oyenusi presents its message in a way that young children can grasp. Still, older readers can reflect more deeply. The illustrations by Kit Laurence Nacua are expressive and warm, bringing emotional depth to the story and enhancing key moments, especially the scenes where Blush, the pastel newcomer, introduces gentleness and light to a fearful world. What stayed with me most was the quiet reminder that softness can be a kind of strength, and that things like connection, conversation, and even prayer can help heal fear and misunderstanding. This is a book that lends itself beautifully to classroom discussions about inclusion, prejudice, and compassion. The Primary Colors deserves a place in every early childhood classroom or home library as a reminder that diversity adds beauty and hope to the world around us.
