David Serra’s The Reimbursement of Nature's Gift is a delightful and imaginative story that draws readers in with its unique premise. The tale follows Dylan, a character many of us can relate to, as he seeks a bit of peace in the woods to escape work stress and tensions with his girlfriend, Holly. What unfolds is a captivating encounter with a magical creature, Kari, who brings a wonderful mix of fantasy and mystery to the narrative. The themes of kindness, the power of nature, and acceptance are beautifully woven into Dylan’s journey, making it a thoughtful exploration of personal growth and adaptation. I appreciated how the story ended on an open note, leaving us pondering how Dylan and Holly's relationship might change and what adventures await him in his new life.
I found the story intriguing and suspenseful. The concept of Dylan’s transformation is compelling, and the pace is solid. The buildup to Kari’s introduction was so great that I found myself wanting to know more about Kari's magic. The action-packed river rescue was definitely a highlight. Even though I found myself wanting to know how Kari got to the woods, I believed that was one of the essences of the short story: to create a thirst and leave you wanting more. Dylan is a relatable character and is well-developed. David Serra’s writing style is simple and easy to follow, with lovely descriptions that bring the story to life. The Reimbursement of Nature's Gift has a lot of heart and so much potential. It left me with a bunch of questions and a desire to see more.
