The Return of Tachlanad by Kathy Fischer-Brown is the first book in a series called Sword of Names. This is a story of a well thought out world of magic and treachery. Lysienthe is the queen of Lothria and she is Gifted. Chief among her gifts is the ability to see the future. When she predicts treachery within the royal family itself and her warnings go unheeded, she does what she can to keep her daughter Elthwen out of harm’s way. I love this family. They are so complicated and talented. The grandfather, Nothlan, reminds me of Merlin from the Arthurian legends, and the twins, Elthric and Elthwen, and the evil uncle Othreld, who is at the center of this family tragedy, all add greatly to the atmosphere of tragedy and regret.
The beauty of The Return of Tachlanad is in the slow unveiling of this wonderful world and its people. Step by step, Kathy Fischer-Brown shows us the people, religion, and magic of this kingdom as she also moves the plot along at an exciting pace. The Return of Tachlanad sets the series up in such a way that I was eager to start the next book in the series just as soon as I finished this one. This is a series that readers can enjoy for a long time to come and Elthwen is a great role model for young girls. Great characters, a good story, and excellent writing tell me that Kathy Fischer-Brown is an author to keep your eye on. She is quite a talented world builder and knows how to create a vocabulary to describe those worlds.
