Sit back, tighten your seatbelt, and get ready for an unforgettable ride. Turner Tomlinson’s The Shooter Act is a thrilling piece of fiction. On his way to the airport, Jack Paulson surmises this is “a great final day.” It is the day before Thanksgiving, the busiest day of the year to fly. LAX is overflowing with travelers. It is on this day that Jack decides to make his stand. This day will more than likely be his last – in this day and age, “you don’t take a gun into an airport and walk out.” Jack pulls out his gun, shoots in the air, and then asks everyone to post pictures on social media. Jack Paulson does the unthinkable; he turns himself into an information virus for the world to see. Jack’s actions must be careful and calculated; he doesn’t want to die before he has a chance to make his plan work. The Shooter Act must be exposed for what it truly is, a governmental act that erases people’s lives, a piece of legislation that murders any who stand in its way. Before the day is done, justice will be served.
I don’t think I can say enough good things about Turner Tomlinson’s The Shooter Act. It is a fast-paced, tech savvy thriller meant to be seen on the big screen! Tomlinson engages his readers from the very beginning by stating that the events to follow all take place in the span of one day. That alone sets the reader up for an accelerated read. Enticingly stringing the reader along, the narrative has perfectly placed details, not giving away too much too soon. Chapter upon chapter, the conspiracy gradually unfolds, leaving a trail of intrigue. The action moves from place to place with ease and speed. The setting is slightly futuristic, highlighting the use of automated vehicles, but my favorite clever touch was the food delivery drones. (I can’t wait until that is readily available).
The characterization was a delightful blend of the insane, the wealthy, the powerful, and the ordinary fellow trying to capitalize in a capitalistic society. However, the hero stands alone. He is a courageous man fighting for justice. But, he is not a vigilante. Contrarily, the protagonist purposely works together with the supporting cast of characters, creating depth in the characterization. The action rises, peaks, and falls with breath-taking precision. Just when you think all is right again with the world, Tomlinson pens an incredible ending, one that keeps you guessing and wanting more.
