Author Biography

J. E. (Jim) Pendleton was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. He has had an interest in automobiles and history for most of his life. He spent several years as an SCCA road racer and a lifetime involved with hotrods. It wasn’t until after he retired from a long career in the telecommunications industry that Jim decided to pursue another of his dreams and write his first book.

His first novel, The Special, was born from his love of family, hotrods and history. These are topics that are sure to be the center of future works. He is currently working on a series of novels where a young China Marine watches regional conflict explode into what becomes World War II. Jim has long considered World War II the single most important historical event of the twentieth century. His father fought in the Pacific and his uncle, Billy Pendleton is the main character in The Special and was lost in the Battle of the Atlantic.

J. E. Pendleton is a member of Military Writers Society of America and LexiCon Writers Group. He still resides in Texas with his wife and family.

The Special by J.E. Pendelton is set in the uncertain years leading up to the Second World War. While hitchhiking to California in search of a better life, Billy Pendleton finds himself building an automobile. He goes on to set speed records and becomes a part of a circle that includes some of the living legends of the car racing scene. Along comes a woman that will change his priorities in life, but the world is also moving towards an inevitable war.

World War II era history never fails to fascinate me. I personally think that most of the stories that took place during this time are captivating and the world needs to know them. It is a joy to read a book that is exceptionally honest and well executed, with a good flow of words. However, it is the depth of the plot that strikes me the most. I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy carefully and masterfully constructed plots. The Special is a story that also involves wonderful characters that will move your heart. This book is for all readers, regardless of their gender, hobbies, and favorite subject.

I love how J.E. Pendleton presents his characters because I could easily understand their personalities. Most importantly, the author makes them believable. Reading the book, it feels as if I have been taken on a journey and towards the end I suddenly feel sad because I know that the journey is about to end. One thing is for sure: I will always remember the wonderful moments in this book that captivated my attention.

This book harks back to a time when things were simple, more laid back, comfortable. They were slower times than nowadays, when baseball was fun, not commercialized, and you built cars in your backyard (without a computer). Our story is set during this time, late 1939 to 1945, crossing over to these days of the 21st century. There are car races for those of you who love cars, with how they were built at that time. There is baseball for those having this interest. Oh, and there is, of course, romance for the person who loves romance. Everything mentioned revolves around a car, which is called “The Special”. The book is written by J.E. Pendleton.

The Special brings people together to become family, breaks down barriers, and helps them enjoy life. Hobbies were what people lived for in the evenings and on the weekends, not TV. People would invite friends over and do these things together, like building “The Special”. It became an item that many were interested in and wanted to see and wanted to have some part in building: whether it was just watching and visiting, or donating something laying around to help in building. It was just fun.

This is a must-read book for everyone to enjoy. As you will note by the dates, it is also a time when World War II rears its ugly head, so intertwined are also bombers, “Liberators,” and going to England for the war. This is a period piece you could definitely get lost in. Very impressive. The Special is an enjoyable book.
