The Tagalongs by Megan Marie Myers is a children’s picture book that follows Julia, who enjoys hiking alone and decides to go up Pancake Peak. But as she reaches the top of the peak to take in the panoramic view with her binoculars, she notices a band of creatures: a pack rat named Fitz, a javelina named Louis, and a porcupine named Violet. They seem to be lost, and when they spot Julia, they plead for her to let them tag along with her and help them get back down from the peak. But can she help them safely get through Hashbrown Hill, onward to Bacon Bridge, down through Black Coffee Cave, then to Muffin Meadow and still make it home for dinner on time? Readers are in for an interesting and somewhat eventful day with Julia and the tagalongs.
Megan Marie Myers has created an exceptional story. The Tagalongs are different and refreshing in my opinion. The story reminded me that even if you prefer your alone time, sometimes you may run into the right people, or in this case, creatures who just might make your day or journey fulfilling. Julia’s character felt real because she wasn’t immediately thrilled to have her alone time interrupted. The dialogue between the creatures was quirky and funny. I absolutely loved the food-themed locations, and young readers’ mouths might water as they engage in the story. Megan also created beautiful illustrations with soft, warm colors that are playful and lively. Readers who enjoyed The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson would also enjoy The Tagalongs.
