“The three o’ clock in the morning sessions” is described as a book on loss and unrequited love. However, several poems at the beginning paint love beautifully and are full of joy. Whether the tone is bittersweet is largely up to the reader’s interpretation. There are many colours and shapes of romantic love, as presented here, and the author, Angie Martin, has written high quality poems that celebrate love. Writing in unpretentious verse, she deals with different themes surrounding the drama and depth of love, and poems such as “reckless” and “whispers” are lyrical and full of imagery.

Often, she is stark and deadpan, musing on the cruel twists of fate and the upheaval of a broken heart. The uncomfortable repulsive thoughts are a stark contrast to the beauty of intimacy. At times she openly mocks the stupidity of wasted love and in other moods she is holding onto hope for a better future. Several poems capture the intensity, fear, numbness, and neediness of a person who craves freedom from recurring thoughts of unrequited lovers and is scared to have their heart broken again.

Angie shows herself to be talented at both poetry and prose. The book ends with a short story about a shy girl who meets a handsome stranger at a party. In this short story, the author expertly describes the girl’s nervousness and clear attraction. Although she fails to muster courage at the end, the reader feels it apt to think of a different ending, a happy one, where fears of a broken heart are overcome and the self-deprecating introvert gains more faith in herself.
