The Turnbull Murders by R.J. Koreto is a Historic Homes mystery. Wren is eager to get started on restoring an old house called the Turnbull House which allows her to work side-by-side with her girlfriend Hadley. The project takes them to the New York Harbor and has them rubbing elbows with a celebrity. The Turnbull House has a long history twisted with murder and a mysterious vanishing that was never explained. The house’s past comes back to haunt them when the studio executive is found dead, leaving Wren and Hadley to believe the killer is someone close to Turnbull’s owner. The investigation deepens when they narrowly avoid danger and they’re sent in circles to discover what secrets the Turnbull family is hiding. As if she didn’t have enough to deal with, Wren is concerned about her father’s love life when he becomes involved with a prominent actress.
The Turnbull House is an important catalyst within the story that draws Wren and Hadley into the mystery. The history and secrets that surround this house give it a presence that makes it feel like another character. Wren’s infectious excitement draws you easily into the mystery connected to the house’s past. There’s a strong historical component that gives the mystery another layer and creates twists and turns that keep you guessing. R.J. Koreto delivers realistic characters that are firmly grounded in reality, making it easy to form a connection with them and have an interest in the investigation. Wren and Hadley’s relationship adds romance, charm, and heart, elements that strike a balance with mystery and murder. Their dynamic is a sweet partnership you instantly fall in love with and want to see more of. Another element is the relationship between Wren and her dad. The drama that transpires adds some levity and lighthearted humor to the mystery with her father’s dating life providing a different complication in her life. However, this does add some touching moments throughout. The Turnbull Murders is highly recommended as it delivers a mystery that has romance, murder, and humor.
