I initially chose to read The Unsuper Adventures of Norma by Mark Svartz because of the colorful, fun-looking, and ethnically mixed children on the cover art. The illustration looks professionally done and has quite an overall appeal. However, as I began to read, I was immediately captured by the delightful story. The author may be a teacher as he knows exactly what kids love and understands the relation between “super kids” and being just a “normal” girl. Brilliantly written, this story will resonate with children who have ever felt they might be on the outside looking in. I laughed at the dazzling play on words with Norma and Normal, Pete and RePete, and Hardy HarHar. I found this book socially responsible while conveying a fun, humorous, and enjoyable story.

The main character in The Unsuper Adventures of Norma by Mark Svartz is normal but extremely inventive. The author uses believable fantasy and a cast of amazing, funny characters to hold the reader’s attention. The cute illustrations and entertaining storyline keep the reader engaged throughout. The use of inviting illustrations encourages the reader to read on. Would all the superpowers lose their power? What would happen if the red button were pushed? The author also includes some science-related problem-solving, using playful research and wacky inventions. But this fun fantasy story teaches a valuable lesson. Shouldn’t most heroes and inventive heroines always win in the end? This charming book teaches us that being normal isn’t so bad.
