When a ladybug lands on you, it is supposed to bring you luck. In Elizabeth Hamilton-Guarino's book The Very Lucky Ladybug, Dot the Ladybug feels lucky herself. She lives in an idyllic garden with her friends, the mice, bugs, and Carmelo the cat. Dot enjoys her life in the garden, listening to the bookworms and painting pictures of her friends. Life is good as her friends eat and play together. But one morning Dot wakes up to discover her spots are gone! What in the world happened to her beautiful spots? Dot is very sad. Will Dot get her spots back? Information on ladybugs is included at the end of the story.
The Very Lucky Ladybug is a sweet story about feelings and friendship. It's easy to be happy when everything is going your way but what happens when something unexpected occurs? Elizabeth Hamilton-Guarino has created an attractive and supportive group of friends that devise a way to make Dot feel more like herself. Woven into the story is the importance of resilience and adapting to changing circumstances. The illustrations by Irina Prisacaru are charming and vibrant. In many pictures, Dot has a word that appears on her chest to indicate what she is feeling, like hope or joy. Kids will enjoy all the distinctive details, from bows to glasses. Kids and parents will appreciate the resourcefulness and help that the garden denizens offer Dot. The Very Lucky Ladybug will have kids searching for ladybugs and other creatures in their gardens.
