The Year After was written by Ashley Warner. In this book she shares her experience beginning with the day she was raped. Her call to 911 was followed by one to her friends. They were there for her, offering support. “Why me?” and “What did I do wrong?” were her constant unanswered questions. The rapist’s hands left dark bruises on her neck and a raspy voice, both of which would eventually fade; but the wound deep inside her would take a lot longer. The author found herself reacting to people’s words in ways that were out of character. She had her beautiful long hair cut off in a very short, buzz type style. I want to tell Ashley Warner how brave I think she is but I doubt that is what she wants to hear. Too often words or phrases sound like platitudes and insincere, even when they are offered with the purest intentions. After eleven years, Ashley can honestly say she is “no longer the victim or survivor, she is Ashley.”
The Year After is Ashley Warner's memoir. Her story is written in an understated manner. Her words convey the fear she experienced and her state of shock after the assault. The quiet and almost subdued manner in which this book is written allows the events to speak aloud. Each chapter represents a different time period. The Year After stirred emotions within me. I wanted to shout, “Neither man nor woman should ever be subjected to such vile violence.” Ashley Warner addresses the “Rape Culture” that exists in our world. I truly believe this book will bring hope and comfort to readers.
