Twilight by Isla Melysin is the second book of The Trident Throne Trilogy that follows the journey of Serena, the heir of Ardaion. To establish a new Twilight Court and also avenge the death of her past lover, Serena leads her army in a battle against the Praetia. But Serena soon makes a shocking discovery that the Praetia are actually lost descendants of the original Twilight Court who were being exploited by the Soludhi. This discovery prompts Serena to change her plan for vengeance and choose compassion, offering them refuge and seeking an alliance with the Soludhi Prince Lyam and his father. However, this alliance provokes Serena's mother, Queen Mab, who conducts cruel experiments with the corrupted Soludhi magic. This leads to a civil war between mother and daughter, and Serena must defeat her mother to save not just her court but the entire realm from Mab's corrupting powers.
What really made Twilight stand out to me was how it blends complex characters and emotional stakes with war and politics. I loved how Serena's growth wasn't just about becoming more powerful but also about becoming a wiser and more compassionate queen. The characters were beautifully developed, especially Serena, who goes from a leader driven by vengeance to a compassionate queen. Isla Melysin has a great and unique writing style, which brought life into familiar fantasy theories by blending them with engaging history. The pacing was engaging, keeping me deeply invested through every chapter, and I can't wait to get my hands on the next installment. The themes of vengeance, betrayal, compassion, and redemption were covered throughout the book. I recommend Twilight to readers interested in complex political novels with strong characters, magical mystery, and ancient history.
