Author Biography

Linda Mah is a children’s author and elementary school teacher from British Columbia. With over 35 years of teaching experience, she thrives on bringing creativity into her lessons to inspire students to both learn and have fun. Her students think of her as "Grumpy’s mom."

Grumpy, a Goffin’s cockatoo, is no ordinary bird. Adopted in 1988, he’s the oldest "child" in Linda’s family. Despite his youthful appearance, Grumpy is actually over 50 years old, with a big personality. He loves to make everyone laugh with his quirky antics, and his confidence is unmatched.

But Grumpy isn’t just a funny bird—he has feelings just like we do, and he can get into trouble just like kids! His mischievous ways inspired Linda to write a book that teaches readers the importance of understanding and caring for animals, while showing how animals can teach us valuable lessons about ourselves.

Linda and Grumpy also volunteer at parrot rescues and visit schools, daycares, camps, and seniors’ homes. They share Grumpy’s story, spread joy, and remind others that animals, especially birds, can be curious, playful, and loving. Together, they show that every creature, big or small, deserves love and understanding.

If you’ve ever worried about fitting in, you’ll be able to relate to this delightful picture book, Uh-Oh! Trouble at School: A Grumpy the Bird Story by Linda Mah. Grumpy the Bird is starting school soon. He is excited about all the possibilities, but he is also worried about whether he will fit in with his classmates and whether his teacher will like him. School finally starts, and Grumpy does all he can to fit in, but no matter how hard he tries, his true nature always comes out. He finds himself chewing his desk, eating with his foot, and flying in class. Eventually, his teacher has to have a talk with his mother when the other pupils begin to imitate his actions, disrupting the class. Notably, the approach his teacher uses while conversing with his mom is heartwarming and a good template for giving constructive criticism.

Uh-Oh! Trouble at School: A Grumpy the Bird Story by Linda Mah is not only humorous but also contains valuable lessons about finding what you’re good at and using it to help others, staying true to yourself, and the value of having supportive friends who accept you for you, point out your strengths and work with you on improving the weak areas. The book uses attractive illustrations with warm colors and a simple and engaging narrative tone to pull readers into the story. My favorite lesson from this book is that you can be responsible and show up for others while being true to yourself. This is a lovely book to teach children the importance of responsibility and staying true to themselves.
