Retired environmental investigator David Samuels and his chemical-sniffing dog Blackout are contacted by David’s former employer and asked to investigate a recent occurrence right in their new backyard. Someone is polluting the French Broad River in Asheville, North Carolina, with benzene. David is tasked to determine who is doing it and why. At first he is not sure he wants to get involved but old habits die hard. From the beginning he and Blackout get caught up in a chain of events that are more sinister than what they anticipated. Are the polluters members of some white power fringe group or is someone simply using them as pawns in a more diabolical plan? Unfortunately for David and Blackout, river pollution is just the beginning. Ultimately, Blackout plays a key role in uncovering the plot -- and David finds out that sometimes retirement isn’t always as expected and can really be more than what one bargains for.
"Water’s Edge" is an environmental thriller with plenty of twists and turns. It is a very good, well-plotted mystery with great beginning, well-flowing middle, and a satisfying end. The characters are appealing and diverse. The readers will quickly find themselves pulling for the protagonist and his wonderful dog as he attempts to stop what appears to be a senseless attack on nature and puts some semblance of order back into his life. But, nothing ever comes easy, especially for our heroes. All that, with some interesting twists and surprises along the way, make this a good book. In short, a good easy flowing story, easy to read and enjoy.
