Who Is Deloris Napoleon Shaw? by Justin Jones is all about Barry March, a broke sixty-five-year-old freelance writer who catches a huge break when he wins a competition to interview Deloris, a very private widow. Deloris Napoleon Shaw has stayed out of the public eye for twenty years, ever since a crazy shootout at her home left her husband, a famous author named Wade, dead. Barry is just looking for an easy, high-paying gig to fix his finances, but he ends up stumbling into a scary world where real crime and fiction collide. The more Barry looks into old police files and tracks down the actual people who inspired Wade’s books, the more he realizes a dangerous syndicate has been keeping tabs on him.
Who Is Deloris Napoleon Shaw? by Justin Jones is a captivating mystery thriller that is easy to get hooked on. Jones constructs the dialogue and scenes with crisp clarity, avoiding recycled plot devices to deliver a riveting detective story. The setting pulls you right into the middle of Oklahoma, plunging into a mix of small-town crime and mind-blowing ancient myths. What makes the book so fascinating is how the characters interact, especially the tense, uncomfortable relationship between this skeptical writer and a strange woman who can actually get inside his dreams. Jones does a great job of mixing regular investigative reporting with deeper philosophical ideas, which gives the story a lot more substance than your average mystery. If you enjoy a unique puzzle that keeps you guessing, this book is definitely worth the read.
