Do you know who you are? Have you ever wondered? In Grandma Bonnie’s Who? a young boy explores who he is. He wonders if he’s the eyes through which he sees. Or perhaps he’s the ears through which he hears. He wonders about his arms that reach for the sky. Or his mind that has so many questions wondering why. There are so many things that define who he is. Even his grumbling stomach when he’s hungry defines him. This little boy is like so many other young children: full of questions and wonderment about who they are and what special qualities define them.
Grandma Bonnie’s picture book, Who? is the first in a series of five preschool books that focus on the questions children love to ask: Who? What? When? Where? and Why? Told in simple language so young readers can easily follow along and improve their reading skills, this lyrical treasure challenges them to explore themselves and what makes them so special and unique. The questions are fun and sometimes silly, which is in line with how a young person thinks and questions the world around them. These questions stimulate the reader’s mind, just as they did the little boy in the story, challenging them to think critically and to employ creative ways to solve problems. The illustrations by Lynn Zuk-Lloyd are bright, bold, and colorful, adding a sense of cheer and humor to the discourse. The author effectively uses onomatopoeia (sound words) to add another dimension to the story. I love the young boy’s subtle but thorough conclusion: “I am uniquely and wonderfully made!” A charming story.
