Wild Bill’s Journal is a Sea Island Extended bonus publication from The Earth-Watcher’s Series, written and illustrated by Lester Ferguson. The first entry in Bill’s journal, dated 1945, discusses the horrors of a war which had just ended and brings news of his father’s untimely death. Bill’s father had been the 9th Earl of Peregrine; with his father gone, Bill is now known as Lord William Killarney, 10th Earl of Peregrine. He learns of the upcoming nuptials of a woman he had loved his whole life, but Bill has no inner strength left as the war and his father’s death had taken their toll. As such, he decides not to intervene. The death of King George VI and Princess Elizabeth’s coronation as Queen Elizabeth II in 1952 are noted, as is the impropriety of interracial marriage in England. Bill then studies Marine Biology and befriends Sir Edward Morley. Those in Bill’s college class, all so involved in the well-being of the planet, are dubbed The Earth-Watchers. On his late father’s yacht, Italia, Bill and his friends set sail on an adventurous journey into the Atlantic Ocean, leading them to the ever-treacherous Bermuda Triangle.
Combining both factual and fictional events in history whilst presenting Lord William’s personal life, Wild Bill’s Journal is remarkably written, not only detailing the horrors of war but the beauty of love; although such polar opposites, both emotions carry so much strength, entwined with passion and heartfelt emotion. Although in need of a polish, Lester Ferguson’s incredible narrative of Wild Bill’s Journal is entrenched with heartbreak, tragedy and adventure. The events which take place as they travel over the ocean’s waters and the magically breathtaking sights they see below the surface, depicted with beautiful illustrations throughout, kept me reading through to the very end. I very much enjoyed the narrative of Wild Bill’s Journal and recommend it to readers aged 7-12 years who are interested in the historical account of emotional avalanche and upheaval, written in an autobiographical-style journal.
