Brenda Bence, Senior Executive Coach and International Branding Expert has created a common sense guide for those supervising others in her book, Would You Want To Work for You?: How To Build An Executive Leadership Brand That Inspires Loyalty and Drives Employee Performance. Brenda Bence explains that a supervisor must be coachable, willing to both listen and hear, allowing his/her team to express themselves and to take ownership of their jobs. A great supervisor is one who knows how to work with people. Brenda Bence encourages readers to evaluate their leadership ability and ask themselves what type of person they would want to work under. This self-analysis is critical, as it is not how WE identify our management style, but it is how others see it. Creating an effective leadership "brand" is just one of the many compelling concepts in this book. Readers will also learn how to encourage and challenge their employees, pull vs push, ask vs tell, and to avoid asking why. Too often a supervisor comes across as challenging in a negative way, putting the employee on the defensive. By rephrasing a sentence and changing a tone of voice, the supervisor can put the employee at ease, encourage them to think outside the box and create a more productive atmosphere.
Brenda Bence offers readers a well-written and well-organized book dedicated to making the reader the best supervisor he/she can be. I use the term "supervisor" because this book can and should be used by those working at ANY level of supervision, not just high level executives. In fact, I am a middle school English teacher and found the concepts in this book extremely relatable. I can't wait to put them to use. The author’s use of examples makes it easy to understand how effective even the slightest changes in your leadership style can be. Brenda Bence's advice is easy to implement and I definitely recommend Would You Want To Work For You? for anyone in a leadership role or just those looking to improve their social and communication skills.
