In Zion Learns to See: Opening Our Eyes to Homelessness, written by Terence Lester and Zion Lester with illustration by Subi Bosa, children and adults will learn about God’s people, the homeless and underserved. The authors, one of whom was homeless himself, want children, youths, and parents to get an educated view and insight into the lives of the homeless community as seen through the eyes of Zion. Zion's mind was challenged and stretched when she went to work with her dad one day. Throughout the day she began to better understand the world around her. She not only saw the impact that her father made daily in working with the people on the streets and at the community center but she also saw the love and care that he provided with God’s love. His sacrifice gave her an appreciation of seeing things and people differently, which caused her to look outside herself and have compassion to help those less fortunate.
As homelessness grows there needs to be more empathy and support for this community. As reflected in Zion Learns to See, we need to see the homeless and underserved communities as God sees them and not judge them by societal myths such as they are lazy, on drugs, or don’t want to work. Many of them are not on drugs and do work but due to the lack of affordable housing, they are confined to living on the streets with their children. Terence and Zion Lester create a mental paradigm shift in how we view the homeless community by providing some questions to begin this discussion. We are all God’s children who each need a smile, a kind word, and to be treated with love and care. Once you read this book, begin to think of ways that you can make a difference in these communities. I have worked within these communities for decades and was able to resonate fully with the authors. Reading this book was such a pleasure and touched my heart. Thank you to the authors, the illustrator, and the Love Beyond Walls ministry for displaying the humanitarian crisis that we are facing and the impact that it’s having on the universe. We need a speedy intervention in creating change. Highly recommended.
