Loveyoubye: Holding Fast, Letting Go, and Then There's the Dog by Rossandra White is a beautiful memoir that revolves around the author's story of loss. Rossandra White finds her world crumbling when her husband of twenty-five years walks out on her without any explanation. She realizes that probably there were cracks in their marriage which she did not notice and which increased over time. White returns to South Africa for a while to take care of her disabled younger brother and, when she gets back to California, she finds that her dog Sweetpea is seriously ill. Sweetpea is the one who forms a connection between her husband and her. She has to take a decision which will change her life, that is to either leave her husband and start a new life or stay in a marriage that is over.

It is a fantastic read with a lot of heart wrenching moments that will make readers feel sad, compassionate and grateful. The story of holding onto a marriage that is breaking up and the emotional struggles and pain of the author is relatable and believable. The shuttling of the scenes from California to South Africa adds another dimension to the memoir and it is an intensely personal write. The dog Sweetpea has also an important role in the book. It is a story of loss, letting go and acceptance. The slow death of a long marriage and all the events connected to it will make readers laugh and cry at the same time.

This delicious memoir has an emotional sweetness that spares no one. The story sweeps from apartheid era South Africa to picaresque Laguna Beach, and then back again as vibrant, flawed, and loving characters, including the dogs move forward. Each has a gift for life. The writer gives all the characters their say, and a bit of respect in most cases. It is the writers attention to detail that brings each of them to life, and thus each has roots in the story. She does this while maintaining a running drama of the mundane and erotic interruptions that pepper the narrative. Rossandra is such an exciting writer. She has an amazing command of the language and her emotional pitch of tragedy and triumph is sublime

I don't usually read memoirs but took a chance on Loveyoubuy. I am really glad I did. It is rare when you have opportunities to reflect on your life and what is really important through someone else. The author really nails it. The title is so perfect. I found myself reacting to the similarities in her story, the emotional struggles, the mental strain of difficult decisions and in the end, the reality of it all.
Rossandra is not alone in her quest to sort it all out, we are all doing just that. Only she is able and willing to write it.

Rossandra White tells her story simply, honestly, and lyrically. From the first page, she carried me along on her journey, not chronologically, but organically, as her then-present life resonated with the past. Usually, I would be impatient with a woman who stayed with a narcissistic man who lived his life without regard for his wife and family, but the author tells her husband's story with generosity and love, with sympathy and candor, and made this reader understand why she spent years trying to make their marriage work.

Fortunately, she had Sweetpea and Jake, her Staffordshire Terriers, who were everything her husband wasn't. The author captured their joyous nature and the intensely personal way they connect with their people in her descriptions of them. Loveyoubye: Holding Fast, Letting Go, and Then There's the Dog is a lovely, honest book written by a woman with the soul of a poet.

What an amazing story! Not only the life she experienced as a child in Africa but the emotional turmoils she experienced with her husband and her disabled brother. And how she struggled with them and moved on. The writing skills she displayed in describing these events and how she dealt with them were captivating and drew me to read it quickly, something I seldom do.
