In Angela Knotts Morse’s Your Dark Fate, Captain Jade Ni’ihm serves in Marran’s military intelligence division, doing so during a royal succession crisis that all began when King Mervyn got too ill to rule. While investigating a series of poison murders targeting nobles connected to the throne, Jade enters aristocratic society under a false identity and discovers that the killings may connect to the supposed death of Prince Artis eleven years earlier. Her investigation draws her toward Nicolas Camarata, a mysterious informant who predicts attacks before they occur and secretly guides her through the political conflict surrounding rival claimants, Lady Arabella Fellsrin and Lord Grannam of Evenshold. As members of the royal family continue dying under suspicious circumstances, Jade has a growing fear that someone close to the throne has been controlling the conflict from the beginning.
Angela Knotts Morse understands that fantasy succeeds when political danger feels personal, and Your Dark Fate benefits massively from the structure of Marran. The author fully fleshes out Jade with the emotional intelligence to think like a soldier while still using compassion. And I love her undercover work as Lady Elena Tavigne! The landscapes are phenomenal, from the opera balconies inside Evenshold Palace that become arenas for surveillance, to the underground shelter beneath Seviere Drive. Even the laws surrounding sorcery feel fully integrated into Marran’s political machinery, because the author effectively weaves them into the inheritance disputes and the punishments facing citizens born with magical abilities. Tightly written and completely immersive, readers who enjoy fantasy that revolves around palace conspiracies and covert investigations inside divided kingdoms will adore this book. Very highly recommended.
