Does it really matter what color you are? Or what color someone else is? In Andrew Ginsburg’s The Colors of My Sky, Lester, the blue butterfly, is taught by his mother to only play with other blue butterflies. Why? Because blue is the color of the sky. But the sky isn’t always blue, and that’s something that Lester learns as he turns down fun times with an orange butterfly, a gray butterfly, and many other colored butterflies. He has to explain it to his mom, though, to join in on all the fun with the other butterflies of many different colors.

Andrew Ginsburg’s picture book, The Colors of My Sky, is a clever way to teach young readers about biodiversity and to accept others for who and what they are, no matter their color. Told in lyrical verse with some rhyme, the plot follows Lester as he learns about differences. The language is simple, so young readers can easily follow along and improve their reading skills. I love the illustrations by Muhammad Asadullah, which are bright and colorful, adding another dimension to the story. The author has cleverly chosen butterflies as his characters to teach young readers about differences, so no dominant color can be associated with human colors. And there are so many different colors of butterflies to choose from. As well as teaching young readers about biodiversity, the author has included a section at the end of the book that describes different types of butterflies and their unique colors. This is a wonderful story on its own, a bonus with the powerful lessons being shared.
