In A Reckoning In Brooklyn, author Michael O’Keefe introduces you to two main characters. Joey Bucciogrosso, known as Butchie, is from an Italian family living in Bushwick, Brooklyn in the 1960s where life is influenced by the mafia and mobsters rule. The police are paid off by the mafia not to see anything. Eddie Curran, known as Fast Eddie, is from Belfast, Ireland, growing up in the same time period with the conflict between Catholics and Protestants, the IRA and the Orange Brigade, and police corruption where the police and their cohorts are willing to accept payment to turn a blind eye. From what they experience, both young teenagers find solace in boxing, which creates in them a moral compass against corruption, aided by a military background. Butchie and Eddie find themselves in the NYPD as police officers in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Their reputations become known to each other as not being willing to take a bribe so they become partners. Their honesty and refusal to be paid off attracts the attention of a high-ranking special agent who enlists them to form a special agency to take out the mafia mobsters.
Michael O’Keefe’s style of writing helps you to have a firsthand experience of life in the early sixties in New York with the influence of the mafia. In this fast-moving story, you are transported back and forth in the lives of individuals from the early sixties to the late seventies and the effects on people’s lives through drugs. The author helps you to see how high up the ranks the mafia could reach with its money and gives you a taste of how difficult it was to achieve justice. He uses the characters well to develop the story and you become personally affected by the good and the bad, which gives you a close connection to the story. A Reckoning In Brooklyn is an excellent, well-written book that is very enjoyable to read.
