“Agitated!,” a book written by Cindy Bandy O’Brien, will be enjoyed by children of all ages. One can read it to them over and over again while also teaching them coping skills. The book begins by stating that several times throughout the day you may feel agitated when things do not go your way and that there are ways to handle the feeling of agitation which are appropriate and will make you feel good. Some examples of the occasions where you may feel agitated are when it is time to stop playing and if you are not ready to stop, or when you have to sit down but you want to stand up. When you feel agitated it is suggested that you could stretch, walk away or count slowly to three. This way the agitation will lessen and hopefully go away and you will feel good for handling the situation in an appropriate manner.
“Agitated!” appears to be geared toward young children; however, it is a great reminder for children (and adults) of all ages about handling stress and feeling agitated in a healthy and appropriate way. It is an excellent discussion starter with children to help them recognize what agitates them throughout the day, as well as helping the adult to also learn what the children are agitated by. The illustrations are adorable and children will enjoy the button characters throughout the book. I love the use of button people and the buttons on the front cover as the book discusses ways in which our “buttons” are pushed each and every day. I would love to read more by Cindy Bandy O’Brien and this book of hers has found a permanent place on my bookshelf and will be used over and over again with my own children as well as with the children I work with.
