History has a way of surprising us, but not quite like this. Chronically Out of Time by Julie Hodgson follows Carol Cole, a library worker whose narcolepsy is tied to something completely unexpected. When she falls asleep, she’s transported to another place or time in history. One minute, Carol is riding a bus through Manchester. The next, she’s in the past watching the Battle of Hastings or walking around ancient Rome. As she tries to understand why it happens, her friend Dave tracks down clues and records patterns. Carol finds strange objects and clues that someone might be changing history. Questions about time, memory, and her place in history are much bigger than she ever imagined. Can Carol tell friend from foe? And will she be able to discover why this keeps happening to her?
The cover is what first caught my eye about Chronically Out of Time by Julie Hodgson. The woman I saw there looked relaxed, almost lost in thought. I instantly wondered why she might be out of time. This book has a quick pace. It blends humor, mystery, and history into an adventure. Carol, the main character, was very relatable. I rooted for her as she tried to make sense of a very strange situation. I liked her friendship with Dave. The dynamic between them was fun but also caring. Each time Carol fell asleep, I was curious where she’d end up next. The writing was approachable. Carol had to be quite clever when she found herself in situations that were both awkward and unbelievable. Anyone looking for time-travel stories that have light fantasy elements with a touch of mystery will want to pick this one up. It's the kind of book that feels ready for a series, and I finished it looking forward to spending more time with these characters.
