Dragon Springs & Other Things is an eclectic collection of eleven short stories by Raven Oak. Cursed with the ability to feel other people's pain, a detective investigates the murder of a homeless man, who turns out to be someone unexpected. Despite constantly moving houses, the narrator can't stop the flooding of their homes until an exorcist is called in to solve the mystery. After being stopped by the highway patrol for taking the wrong lane, a woman realizes that accompanying her partner to his workplace may not be the best idea. A writer frequents a coffee shop and gets acquainted with an eccentric old man and his young friend. A young woman traversing a cold and desolate wasteland on a dying planet comes across a starving dragon and strikes up an unlikely friendship.
Using a potent mix of magic, mystery, and intrigue, Raven Oak delivers an enthralling short story collection that you will want to revisit. The tales in Dragon Springs & Other Things touch upon various genres, including fantasy, psychological thriller, and mystery, taking readers on an immersive odyssey. The author has an incredible ability to build fascinating worlds that feel lived-in, distinct, and authentic. Apart from the worldbuilding, Oak also excels in creating well-developed characters whom readers will find compelling. These stories are very unpredictable. There is a sense of tension and intrigue woven into the narratives that seeps into the reader's psyche as they constantly try to figure out what's coming next. Overall, this is a riveting anthology that I highly recommend to short story lovers.
