Emergence: The Singularity Sequence is the opening novel in an enthralling futuristic technothriller trilogy by Elie Ra. It is 2101. Detective Nate Wartman is on his first assignment in the Crimes department of Arc, the mega-corporation whose flagship product, Ego, is implanted in the skulls of billions of people, enabling two-way communication between their brains and the digital world. Assisted by Jane, a feisty VR navigator, and Pol Haff, the main suspect and the former lead architect on the same project as the other victims, Nate is investigating the mysterious deaths of Arc’s prominent engineers. When their boss unexpectedly suspends Nate and Jane, they go AWOL and discover a secret shielded data center and a web of international corporate espionage. But will they find out who murdered Arc’s employees?
Emergence: The Singularity Sequence has everything I expected in a top-quality technothriller murder mystery – sophisticated crimes, cutting-edge technology, quirky characters, nail-biting action, and sparkling humor. I liked how Elie Ra transposed his professional experience as a software engineer into this remarkable novel. The story made me marvel at the smooth blend of virtual reality populated with VR ghosts and the world of the living. The unexpected humor was witty and perfectly timed; I loved HAM for high-alert mode and Jane’s hilarious bickering with Nate. On a deeper level, I liked the search for purpose and belonging and the dilemmas of digital immortality. All in all, it is a highly satisfying read on all counts, and I look forward to exploring the post-singularity world in the upcoming sequel. If you enjoy technothrillers and murder mysteries, you will love this stellar novel.
