Teaching kindness to children is always an important goal for parents, and this children’s book presents a unique story imparting this lesson. In a Brooklyn pet shop, a variety of older animals – from cats and dogs to birds and chameleons – are sold to caring people. The aquariums are displayed in one corner of the store. One of these held Oscar, a grumpy piranha. He was rescued by a sewer worker after his owner threw him down the drain. Oscar’s only pleasure in life was to taunt and scare the goldfish in the aquarium next to him. Also, he is a carnivore, meaning his only meal was a goldfish every day. A brave goldfish named Marla befriended him, eventually changing his life by showing him love. In the children’s book titled I Can Be Kind, written by Rainbow Gal, a captivating tale is told.

This book provides many opportunities for parents to reinforce the values of caring and loving kindness. Additionally, Oscar’s decision to become a vegetarian will be welcomed by many families. The illustrations in this book are very detailed and simply delightful. Adults and children alike will be fascinated by how the animals’ personalities are revealed in the drawings. At the back of the book, black-and-white sketches of previous pages provide coloring opportunities for children. Author Rainbow Gal’s book, I Can Be Kind, would be a wonderful addition to any young child’s library. It will be read over and over again – initially by parents and then by new readers.

This story caught me right off the page. I found the colors of the book to be inviting, the story to be super cute and the characters to be likable. Even the bully in the end. I found lessons for children in this book and I love when an author can build lessons within a book. This author did not disappoint when it came to providing a beautiful book for parents to read to their children, teachers to read in school, and children to read in their little nooks at home. I hope all will enjoy and think twice about all the animals in their lives.

This is an adorable, sweet, and heart-warming story about pets, especially about pet fish, and the power of kindness. The story flows nicely and has a heart-touching ending that will leave you and your child wanting to be kind. I appreciate the message-- adopt a pet! The illustrations are beautiful and realistic and there are even coloring pages at the back!
