In Imperial World by William L Frame, Taric recognized that his species was at risk from a cunning and dangerous predator known as the Kessra. To protect them without breaking strict laws against interference, he relied on Jennifer, who had a thorough understanding of the Imperial Charter and its regulations. Empress Isabella, troubled by the threat of the Kessra on Planos, and the deceased Admiral Harrington, who believed the Kessra possessed intelligence, sought different ways to assist Jennifer and the native inhabitants. Jennifer transformed a mountain cave into a secure dwelling, using modern technology, which angered the Kessra. Isabella imagined a coordinated assault on this home but held firm to the belief that all life deserves respect. She planned to return and use Merlin, the flagship’s AI, to analyze the situation and recommend lawful actions.

William L Frame’s Imperial World showcases excellent writing that pulls readers into a spectacularly detailed story in a brand-new literary world. We are immediately immersed in Taric’s grief and the toll of trauma, with careful attention to his isolation, nightmares, and self-doubt. As the story evolves, we gradually see the impact of this on the larger arc. Frame excels at using suspense that is built through foreshadowing. In a brilliant display of social hierarchy and prose that practically sings, we hear, “When the warm moons return and the land grows green once more, then you’ll see the wisdom of my plan unfold.” I love the clash between advanced AI technology and the raw, brutal survival of villagers with bows, spears, and barricades. The juxtaposition deepens the story and makes us question what real strength means in this war, or any other. Overall, this is among my top reads for 2025, and well worth the investment in page count. Very highly recommended.
