In Insidius: A Nation Found by Matthew Runals, four young cadets—Kyle, Joey, Brian, and Lucas—find themselves in a war-torn world where duty, loyalty, and identity collide. Trained at the military school of Lapidius, they're sent on a mission that quickly spirals into a series of dangerous battles against monstrous enemies known as the Embers and other twisted creatures. With their companions, including the mysterious Logan (formerly Chase) and the sharp-witted Maisie, the cadets must navigate ambushes, political rivalries, and magical relics that have the power to either destroy or preserve their nation. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the true enemy may lie not just on the battlefield but in the choices each character must make. Filled with action, camaraderie, and personal growth, this second installment raises the stakes and adds more intrigue, surprises, and heart to the fantasy world.
Insidius: A Nation Found by Matthew Runals delivers a gripping blend of fantasy, strategy, and youthful emotion. The story moves at a strong pace, shifting between tense battles and moments of quiet introspection. The plot is well-structured, with clear arcs and several unexpected twists, particularly the mysterious Ember soldier and the monstrous creatures emerging mid-battle. These surprises keep the momentum alive. One of the standout elements is the monument token system, which adds a spiritual layer to the worldbuilding without overwhelming the story. The writing style is straightforward and clean, making the complex world easy to follow. Emotional moments, such as Logan's struggle with identity and Kyle's internal doubts, feel genuine and relatable. The core cast is well-drawn and engaging, and their relationships provide much of the emotional weight. This is an excellent choice for fans of adventure-driven fantasy featuring young protagonists, military training tropes, and themes of loyalty in friendship. Its imaginative world, solid pacing, emotional range, and skillful balance of action make it a compelling read.
