Little Town Blues by David Gonthier, Jr. is set in Fryebury Falls where everyone seems to be haunted. Moira Davis catches glimpses of the twin sister she was unable to save. Jack Cleary and his son J.J. are possessed by an ominously malicious manifestation they call “the Gail”. George Pearson is drinking himself to death because he accidentally killed his daughter in an automobile accident. All the while, Chief of Police Mike Melanson is struggling to please his high-maintenance wife, Julie, as well as do his job. Will he make the mistake of promoting Jack as his assistant or listen to the community's complaints and fire him? What can stop the forces of evil from overtaking the town?
Little Town Blues by David Gonthier, Jr. reads like a cross between daytime drama and horror. The storytelling style is contemporary and the professional writing reflects the author’s expertise in film and television. I found the relationship between Mike and Miss Julie refreshing because no matter how hard they fought, they still loved each other. Even though it looked rocky toward the end, all of Mike’s closing thoughts are of his wife and second child. What I found amazing and strangely satisfying was the plot device used to exorcise evil. I was reading along, expecting a certain direct action, and with a twist, another parallel action occurred. The resolution was dramatic and fitting for the small-town cosmos. Sympathetic logic declared that the solution worked! I recommend this book to those who like to read something dark and edgy.
