A nap in the wrong place can lead to quite a bit of trouble. In Looking for Wilbur by Valerie Thomas, Winnie the Witch and her big black cat are spending a sunny day in the garden. Winnie falls asleep, but Wilbur is hungry. He wanders over to the park and sees people enjoying their picnics. Looking as sad as possible earns him cheese, cake, a boiled egg, and even some sardines. After eating all that food, he’s ready for a nap of his own. A fluffy blanket seems like the perfect bed, but Wilbur doesn’t realize it’s in a campervan. Before long, the vehicle pulls away with him still asleep inside. He eventually wakes up far from home with no idea which direction to take. Meanwhile, a worried Winnie tries calling her friends, then reaches for her spell book, crystal ball, and broomstick. Will one of her magical ideas help her find Wilbur?
Looking for Wilbur by Valerie Thomas is another cute adventure featuring Winnie and Wilbur. This is my second book about the pair, and I’m glad they’re part of a series because children will enjoy returning to these funny characters. The writing moves at a good pace, while the repeated meows and spells make it fun to read aloud. I’d love to share this with my kindergarten students because we could discuss what to do if we get lost, how Winnie shows she cares, and why Wilbur’s hiding spot causes trouble. Kids could also draw a map showing his journey or a picture of themselves taking a nap. Korky Paul’s colorful, detail-filled illustrations add humor and give young readers plenty to look at on every page. Those who like silly mishaps, magic, and lovable animal characters will want to pick this one up. As L. Frank Baum wrote, “There is no place like home,” and Wilbur would certainly agree.
