Lovingly Restored: A Romantic Odyssey by Ray Hobbs is the story of a man who is hardened by life, but his life is about to be turned upside down by a piano that he needs to restore. Russell Tompkinson is a very cynical man who earns a living by restoring pianos. Life has taught him some very harsh lessons and that has hardened his soul. He does not know how to appreciate and feel for people who are in trouble. He is very much like a walking, talking statue that just goes by.
However, his life and his whole outlook on life are changed when he is asked to restore a piano for Julie’s Club, a little organization for sick children. This is the moment in life when he finally feels something; he feels an attraction and anticipation, thanks to the women he encounters while he works to restore that grand piano. Finally, there is something that intrigues him. One of these women will become his destiny and his salvation, but before that, there is a mystery to be solved. If he can do that, he will find something that is very close to his heart. But can he?
Simple yet complex at the same time, Lovingly Restored is a story that will speak to you on so many levels. Once you start reading this novel, you will realize that the title represents so many facets of the story. I felt that the story was unique, very interesting and well-written. The elements of romance and second chance were spot on! I loved it. It was fantastic.
