Murder, Sweet Murder by Joseph L. Gavett is the story of serial killer Annie Halfpenny, and the private eye, Tobin Miles, who tries to stop her. The place is San Francisco; the time is the early 1900s. Annie commits over twenty killings savagely, brutally and without conscience. Tobin follows the clues and her trail, but she is very good at what she does and leaves very little behind. The few witnesses always describe the killer leaving the scene as a man dressed in a dark brown coat and a bowler hat. Tobin quickly realizes that this is only a disguise meant to confuse and make it even harder to find Annie. Tobin’s life is placed in danger, as well as that of his wife and infant daughter, before the breathtaking conclusion.
Murder, Sweet Murder is not really a mystery because we know the killer and are there as she does her killing. It is a true detective story, however, as we follow along on each case. Joseph L. Gavett has written this with the reader in mind and given us the opportunity to be in both the murderer and the private eye’s head. Murder, Sweet Murder is an old fashioned story taking place without cell phones, DNA, crime labs and the like, making the case harder to solve, but not lacking in any excitement, adventure or edge of your seat reading. I think all detective fans will find Murder, Sweet Murder a winner.
