My Rainy Day by Athena Grace is a children’s picture book that follows a child’s experience of waking up and realizing they’ll be cooped up inside on a rainy day. The child's journey from feeling sad and bored to appreciating the small things that brighten the day—despite the rain—will resonate with many kids. It serves as a gentle reminder that even rainy days have their own special charm. Whether you curl up in a favorite spot with a quiet activity or watch raindrops fall on the window, there are always bright spots to be found, even on the gloomiest days. With its calming rhythm and serene, eye-catching artwork, the book beautifully reflects the quiet tone of a rainy day, making it perfect for bedtime or cozy moments indoors.

As an educator, I think it was an excellent idea to write a book about something so universally felt by children: the disappointment, boredom, and occasional sadness that often come with being stuck indoors on a rainy day, without rushing them toward forced positivity. It was also a smart choice for Athena Grace to show how the child’s mood gradually improves throughout the day, reminding readers that even though a day may start negatively, it can end positively. The slow, thoughtful pacing—almost like a poem or lullaby—makes it ideal for classroom read-alouds, mindfulness breaks, or quiet reflection. It could also spark meaningful classroom discussions about what students feel or wish to do on a rainy day. I also enjoyed the calming yet colorful illustrations, which add warmth to the quiet mood of the story. I recommend My Rainy Day to preschool through early elementary classrooms, school counselors, and families looking to nurture emotional literacy with empathy and grace.
