My Skating Dream by Nancy Whiteford opens with a tired little girl named Sassafrass, who dreamed of becoming an awesome skater like her friends - Alex, Paige, and Moonpreet. They regularly encouraged each other. She planned to work hard on stretching her legs, pointing her toes, and skating with confidence. When her parents provided her with the coach that she had requested, she learned the technicalities of skating. She also learned to be patient with herself, trust the journey, and be proud. Eventually, she did her first solo performance and entered a competition. Waking up to her best dream ever, she was determined to practice harder and become a figure skater. While she learned to enjoy the moment and skate with all her heart, she realized that the more she practiced, the better she became. Sometimes it became frustrating as she kept falling, but she always got up and practiced balancing on and off the ice to reach her goal.
My Skating Dream by Nancy Whiteford is the perfect story to encourage children to follow their dreams. The tale teaches us to be determined, despite the failures that come our way. Sassafrass teaches us to be resilient and patient. She shows that having faith in ourselves and enjoying the process of learning makes us better. Hard work and regular practice can bring us closer to success. Noorpreet Jandu's vibrant illustrations stimulate the imagination and creativity of the reader. Children will enjoy reading the story because the excellent combination of words and images will capture children's attention and will help them identify with the message. The language is appropriate for young children, and the rhythmic writing style makes it fun to read it aloud. It can act as one of the stepping stones in inculcating sound reading habits.
