Nite Nite, Piggies by Jane E. Ruth is a short bedtime children's story about a father, daughter, and a host of little piggies preparing to go to bed. Like clever young children, these piggies come up with amusingly creative ways of delaying bedtime. Whether it's asking for more playtime, a bedtime snack, or getting distracted by a bug under the bed, the more they can delay their bedtime, the better. The story ultimately concludes with the whole family gathering for a bedtime prayer, with all the little piggies in bed, sound asleep.

As a father of two daughters, I found the plot of Nite Nite, Piggies relatable. These piggies realistically depict my own daughters’ tactics to avoid bedtime. Jane E. Ruth's writing is well-paced, concise, and short enough to maintain a young reader’s attention. In some cases playful, while in other cases stubborn, I found the piggies’ personalities entertaining. I love each piggie's friendly facial expression and Yassibel Duque's artwork for each one, with their chubby cheeks and big eyes. As a Christian, I also appreciate how the narrative ends with a prayer, giving the story a more traditional Christian context and background. One of the most significant characteristics of Nite Nite, Piggies is that the text is written in both English and Spanish. This creates a story that is accessible to bilingual households and a wide array of children. I would certainly recommend this book to parents of children under the age of 4, particularly those of a bilingual background.

Nite Nite, Piggies, written by Jane E. Ruth and illustrated by Yassibel Duque, is a children's book that depicts a group of piglets who resist bedtime with a variety of excuses. Each pig protests by saying they are not ready to sleep, citing reasons like wanting to play, being hungry, or needing a drink of water. Despite their protests, the repetitive "Nite Nite" refrain encourages them to settle in. The book also introduces young readers to different pig breeds through illustrations, promoting awareness of animal diversity. As the story progresses, the piglets are gently guided toward rest, and the book concludes with a prayer, offering a peaceful ending to the bedtime routine. Each line on every page of the story is written in both English and Spanish, adding an educational and inclusive layer to the book as a whole.

Nite Nite, Piggies by Jane E. Ruth is a delightful bedtime read for toddlers. The simple, rhythmic writing is perfect for young listeners, while the repetitive "Nite Nite" phrase creates a calming, predictable flow. As a parent, I couldn't help but smile at how the piggies' sudden outbursts of excuses—like being hungry or wanting to play—mirrored the nightly bedtime struggles with my own children. The illustrations are bold and vibrant, keeping little ones engaged and fascinated by the adorable piggies. The humor and charm of the story make it not only relatable but fun. The book's gentle tone, combined with a sweet prayer at the end, offers a perfect, soothing transition to sleep, making it an ideal choice for bedtime reading. Very highly recommended.

Little ones are always very clever at coming up with reasons not to go to sleep at night. They don’t want to close their eyes (of course, that would put them to sleep), they want something to eat, something to drink, and the list goes on. It’s the same thing every night. In Jane E. Ruth’s Nite Nite, Piggies, many different types of piggies give the same arguments that children do, fighting off the powers of oncoming nighttime sleep. And, yes, just like humans, there are many different types of piggies, all with different colorings and different sizes and other characteristics. We are all uniquely different.

Jane E. Ruth’s picture book, Nite Nite, Piggies is another book in the Nite Nite series. Told in simple language so young readers will be encouraged to follow along and begin their reading journey, this story is written in two languages: English and Spanish. Young readers will chuckle along as each different piggie shares one of the many excuses to avoid sleep that children frequently use. The illustrations by Yassibel Duque are sweet and adorable. At the end of the book is a list, with illustrations, of the different piggies featured in the story. This is a fun story, but also an educational one as young readers will learn that every living creature is different and unique and there are many different types of piggies. They will also have the benefit of learning some basic vocabulary in two different languages. Very enjoyable.
