Ordinary Miracles is a slice-of-life drama novel by Wanda Snow Porter. Seventeen-year-old Tobi Mathews' life turns upside down when her father, Hank, driven by his fear of an upcoming global catastrophe, moves their family to a remote farm in California's coastal mountains. After her mother leaves to find a job in the nearby town of Cielo de Ventana, it doesn't take long for Tobi to be fed up with her father's beliefs about Armageddon and steal his station wagon to join her mother in Ventana. She doesn't find her mother but meets decent people who embrace her as one of their own. But her father follows her trail, and soon after he arrives in town, a devastating earthquake hits the area. Are Hank's prophecies about a potential cataclysm true, or is it his paranoia stemming from his PTSD after his stint in Afghanistan?
Author Wanda Snow Porter tells a moving coming-of-age story about the choice between living in fear and paranoia or enjoying each moment of one's life and being grateful for it. Ordinary Miracles celebrates the times of our lives, which at first glance may seem ordinary, but remain etched in our memories forever. Those times include the moments we cherish with loved ones or pursuing our passions to the best of our abilities. Each character in this book feels like someone you may have known in real life. Every character oozes personality and makes the story all the more riveting to read. Overall, a character-driven coming-of-age tale that I highly recommend.
