Paper Dragon, book one in the Peter Jarry Crime Thriller series by Mark Thomas, follows the titular Peter Jarry as he races to find out who wants him erased after the death of kingpin George Tripko, who passes during a routine medical procedure that should not have killed him. When Jarry checks the paperwork and the finances, he finds signs that someone in George’s family had been draining money for years, and is now trying to shift suspicion onto him. The turning point comes when someone close is murdered, and it's clear that the Tripkos want Jarry gone on paper in addition to real life. Now he has to find out who in that circle is pulling the strings, and how far they are prepared to go.
Paper Dragon by Mark Thomas is a brilliant stroke of storytelling, and the author ticks all the boxes by building power through the collapse of George's empire, and the mix of mystery, danger, and sharply drawn surprises that fall upon Jarry as a result. It's impressive when an author can take ordinary, and even idyllic, settings and tear them apart. Thomas creates a stage with cottages, rivers, and small towns, and then pulls back with jarring intrusions and armed visits, and the emergence of the enormous beast in a cleanup zone. Margaret is a character who adds to Jarry's arc in an organic way, and by the time we are taken into The Dragon's Lair, the story is fully anchored in its own world, and it is a world I'd like to spend more time in when book two appears. Recommended.
