Rosa in Bloom by Janet Rhyme Key is a coming of age, nice story especially for girls. It is well written and I enjoyed the tale. It is written at an appropriate age level, clean, and wholesome. It is a good tale to teach children how to be part of a family, how to grow up and be responsible for their own actions. It has lots of Spanish flavor and much of their culture. It has some Spanish words that are easy to understand what they mean. It also has a dictionary at the front of the book to help with translation of the Spanish words used in this tale.
Rosa is eleven years old and all she has done for the past five years is watch her brother Ricky, who is two years younger. In her home, women get to do all the work and men are served. She is sick of being left out of her friends’ activities because her parents work.
Everything screeches to a standstill when Rose loses her temper. That night, her proud Spanish grandmother ends up in the hospital and dies in a couple of days. Rosa vows to change things in her home and she needs her brother’s help to be able to accomplish it.
I found that the story was a very good portrait entwined with the Spanish culture. It was balanced, respectful and tastefully used. It is a great book for girls from ten through twelve. They will understand it better and enjoy the tale more. Janet did a great job with her Spanish and its use.
