Solar Coaster by Jared Schoch is a business memoir about a career spent helping build the modern American solar industry, with spirituality serving as a foundation for leadership. Beginning with the experiences that formed his view of work, the author follows his path from high-tech into energy as he starts seeing renewable power as the place where business can serve a larger good. The fast-moving solar market soon turns that conviction into a working life where utility deals can be transformed by changing economics almost overnight. As his responsibilities expand, he begins questioning what success should look like when family life and his values have to exist beside ambition. That question ultimately leads to the creation of TurningPoint Energy, where he sets out to build a company around the kind of leadership he wants to practice.

Jared Schoch’s Solar Coaster brings industry experience into leadership advice that readers can actually use. The author knows what he is talking about, with a directness that gives his guidance the ring of years spent doing the work he discusses. You see the value of that background when he drives utility lines, photographing substations after discovering power maps are unavailable, a field example that shows how site development can depend on firsthand investigation. His treatment of leadership carries the same credibility. During the pandemic, he tells employees the company has two years of cash available to keep the team together until business returns, putting responsibility for his staff into concrete terms. It's the history that makes the book credible, something he brings back to the discussion through real-life examples and tried-and-true methods. Readers interested in business memoirs with useful workplace guidance should put this one on their list. Very highly recommended.
