Soldier of Empire by S. A. Melia is a mesmerizing YA science fiction novel that will appeal to fans of epic fantasy. The story follows King Teodor of Earth as he struggles to maintain his claim to power in the midst of political intrigue, alien threats, and personal danger. After a devastating plague ruins London and forces the evacuation of refugees to the planet Sas Darona, Teodor and his loyal bodyguard Guy Erma find themselves in a galaxy rife with treachery. When a pirate attack blows their Imperial dragonship to pieces, Guy Erma makes it out alive. The bad news? King Teodor is missing, presumed dead, and everyone is pointing fingers at Guy. Did he really leave his friend and king behind to save himself? Guy is determined to find and save the king. He had shoved Teodor into a VIP escape pod, which vanished somewhere on this lawless, uncharted world. While navigating this wilderness, he is unaware that the king survived and has been taken captive and sold into slavery in a crystal mine. Can he find and save the king with the odds stacked against him?

S. A. Melia’s writing captured my imagination, and the worldbuilding had me utterly immersed, from plague-ravaged futuristic London to the tribal, dangerous mines of Sas Darona. The story is driven by a compelling cast: Teodor, the reluctant and often isolated young king, whose maturity is tested at every turn; Guy Erma, a fiercely loyal orphan-turned-bodyguard, whose own mysterious origins and inner doubts enrich his character; and Marline, a survivor whose presence deepens the story’s emotional depth. The conflict is layered: Teodor’s external battles against pirates and imperial rivals mirror his internal struggle with loneliness and duty. The author writes skillfully about loyalty, sacrifice, and the burdens of leadership. Soldier of Empire is well-plotted, and I enjoyed how the author uses uncertainty to build suspense in the story. The atmospheric writing, the cinematic descriptions, and the unforgettable characters are a few of the elements that make this story a winner.

Soldier of Empire is the third novel in the Dodecahedral Space Empire series by S. A. Melia. The story of Guy Erma and King Teodor continues as they face relentless tension and high-stakes adventure. When the Imperial dragonship is attacked, Guy survives but faces accusations of abandoning his king, who is now missing and presumed dead. Determined to clear his name, Guy embarks on a dangerous mission across the wild, unmapped world of Sas Darona. He infiltrates a pirate sanctuary in search of answers. Meanwhile, Teodor is now stripped of his royal title and authority. He endures brutal slavery in a crystal mine. Forced to labor alongside native workers, he must rely on intelligence, resilience, and unexpected alliances if he hopes to escape and fulfill his destiny. Can the two of them reclaim their lives and get back home?

Author S. A. Melia carried the momentum forward from the previous novel and ensured that readers were in the moment with Guy and Teodor. The author skillfully splits the narrative between Guy’s desperate search and Teodor’s brutal struggle for survival. She created a parallel journey of two men who must rely on their inner strength to overcome impossible odds. The contrast between Guy’s high-stakes mission and Teodor’s physical and emotional torment in the mines is particularly effective. I loved the world-building, the intense action, and the vivid descriptions that made me feel like I was in the scenes with Teodor and Guy. Soldier of Empire is a strong continuation of the series, making it worth the wait for the sequel.

Soldier of Empire is the third installment of S.A. Melia's explosive Dodecahedral Space Empire series. In book one, Guy Erma, an unregistered child, trains in martial arts at House Jewel and wins entry into the Dome Militant. Prince Teodor, heir to the Dodecahedral Imperial House, rides telepathic gorans until cyborg Battle Borgs abduct him during a Cathedral attack, sparking a rescue mission. In two, Teodor’s capture destabilizes the twelve-planet realm, while Guy has dangerous knowledge. As Teodor endures confinement, both must decide whom to trust, with survival and the empire’s future at risk. Now, Guy survives an attack on the Imperial dragonship while King Teodor vanishes, presumed dead. Searching Sas Darona’s wilderness and infiltrating a pirate base, Guy seeks answers, unaware that Teodor has been enslaved in a crystal mine. Teodor's disappearance spells disaster for Guy, personally and politically.

“...he needs you more now than ever. You have to believe, Guy. Tomorrow, you'll have to fight to rescue him and bring him home.” Soldier of Empire by S.A. Melia drives the saga into a complete change of scenery that is so, so much more interesting. I live in London, I love London, but I admit I get a bit tickled when I am immersed in the city's apocalyptic future. It's not pretty, but it is cinematic, and I recognize the whole lot of London's dying scenes. Points of view move between Teodor, Guy, and Karl, giving us multiple perspectives; their intersecting paths expand the story’s scale. I thought this was the final book in a trilogy, but upon finding out there is a fourth, Captain of Empire, I waited on writing this review until I finished that next installment. Melia continues on a trajectory of moving from strength to strength; the sense of anticipation for what lies ahead in this universe is undeniable.
