When Sonny meets Izzy, she is shaking a tambourine and holding a sign that reads "The End is Near!" Within a few days, Sonny, the journalist, and Izzy, the homeless woman, become unlikely friends. In St. Izzy of F Street by Robb Grindstaff, Sonny wants to write about homelessness in Middle America and use Izzy’s story as the lead. He makes a deal with Izzy: he will figure out her six-page prophecy, and she will tell him her story. But she must first prove she can predict a serious event within seven days. When her prediction comes true, Sonny lands a major story. He hopes to leverage this story into a career change, landing a job with a major newspaper. But what if, instead, it ends his career?

In St. Izzy of F Street, Robb Grindstaff tells a fascinating tale filled with prophecies and Old Testament references that build suspense and keep the reader engaged. I shared Sonny’s frustration as he tried to convince his boss and other journalistic agencies that he was telling the truth about Izzy and her prophecies. Izzy is a great character, both charming and annoying at the same time. The author uses this character effectively and has the ability to keep the reader guessing. I continued to wonder how he was going to make the connection between Izzy’s prophecies and the events happening around Sonny. In the end, he adds a twist that was not only a surprise but one that leaves the door open for a second installment.
