Stanley Brambles and the Lost City by Owen Spendlove is an interesting fantasy tale that will be well received by young readers, a tale of adventure and courage. Stanley is a typical teen with the usual teen problems that are centered on a boring school life. One thing isn’t normal about Stanley, though: he has unusual dreams about a giant crystal floating somewhere, dreams that are soon to become a reality as he and his friends are thrust into the world he’d been dreaming about all along. Only this world is more than anything a thirteen-year-old boy could have envisioned. It is fraught with dangers and an evil that could destroy the world that draws them forth, and their lives as well. Can Stanley and his friends defeat the evil and protect the legendary city of Quetzal’Khan?
Stanley Brambles and the Lost City is an exciting entry in the teen market, but it is a book that adults can also enjoy. I love the way the author handles the sense of adventure that is inherent to teenagers. The characters are equally engaging and readers will enjoy Stanley as he explores his strengths and learns to think on his feet. The theme of friendship seems to be well-developed and it offers great insights to readers about the power of being connected. Yes, young readers will learn the invaluable lesson of collaboration and the powerful truth that success is always the work of a team, a community working together. Owen Spendlove’s writing is fluid and beautiful, and it is wonderful to see how his writing reflects the world of young readers.
