Stormy Sailing by Tuula Pere is a Lyrics of Life adventure story. Liban has been on the move since not long after he was born. His homeland is not safe and his family must find them a new home. But for all the years they had been traveling, nowhere seemed safe enough for them to settle. Along the way, the family faces many difficulties but Liban's mom had another baby, and now he was a big brother. The time comes for Liban's dad to make a tough decision and split the family up. He sends Mom to safety across the water with the baby, and he and Liban stay behind. With a little imagination and a lot of hard work, a homemade ship seems their only hope to be reunited with the others. Can they make it across the stormy seas in a boat made of scrap?
Stormy Sailing by Tuula Pere is an amazing story of survival against the odds. Beautifully illustrated by Catty Flores, it tells the story of a family searching for safety. It's the ideal story to show kids, particularly those in safe countries, that not everyone has an easy life, and some spend their lives fleeing from danger, never settling in one place for too long. It's an eye-opener and will hopefully help children build compassion for others. It also teaches that you can achieve anything if you try. Having faith in yourself and others is important for survival. The characters are really well-developed and are all likable, and kids will follow this story with bated breath, hoping for a happy ending – no spoilers. This is another wonderful offering from Tuula Pere and should be part of every kid's library and school reading lessons, too.
